More Dark Fairy Behaviour

It is thought that fairies are usually quite nice to humans, but all that changes if you offend them.

Then they become dark & dangerous.

There are accounts that they abduct babies, carry them back to their magical dimension & put a changeling in the place of the human baby.  These changelings apparently bear some resemblance to the abducted child, but are likely to be paler & more irritable in nature.  As time is different in the fairy realm the kidnapped children may return to the earth after what seems to be only one night, only to find that many years have passed in its homeland.

There are lots of other stories about fairies performing lesser mischievous, but nonetheless annoying pranks that may be akin to the poltergeist, such as moving things, blowing out candles & causing objects to fall off shelves.

They’ve also been held responsible for causing milk to curdle, spoiling crops & preventing bread from rising.

With belief in the dark character of the fairy so widespread, it’s possible that they have often gotten a bad press.  Perhaps a young woman or two may have forgotten to put the yeast in her bread & not wanting to be punished for her mistake she decided it was easier to blame it on the fairies.
